"Counsellor is not a savior."
Getting involved in the helping relation has made me realised a number of values in life. Apart from passion, there are many other elements that we need to take care of. First, the will to be persistent and be firm. Students come in and aspect you to help. Some exceptional cases may threaten you, to help, if not... blablabla. Some parents can even call in and say "What counsellor are you when you don't know how to assist in this issue? How sincere are you?" Deep down inside, we just merely want to help the students. We just got to prepare ourselves and not being swayed by others. Be firm with where we're standing. Though i am not a counsellor yet, but looking at different circumstances from colleagues, i am learning to be firm with my point of view. I am thankful for them teaching me at work.
Nobody likes to be judged, especially when your hardwork wasn't seen but judged. What's more, your sincerity and your workload are being questioned by others? Counselling is such a beautiful career to be in, it is personal, it is one-to-one job where a professional explore an individual's life OR it can be a job where the counsellor is making impact to a group of students. We don't have to use a hailer and tell the whole world about the cases that we're handling.
The expectations that we hold within ourselves can kill us, but we just have to remember that being in this helping relation doesn't mean we are savior. The ultimate savior is God himself. Thus, so long we've tried our best, it may not work out for everything, but i always believe we will make a lil difference in people's life. Don't let guilt overtake you.
Be the genuine self. Try our best in everything.
It's great to see you smile. =)
